Wellington to Host Intercontinental Play-off

Wellington to host 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ Intercontinental Play-off in November

The All Whites have progressed as Oceania’s qualifier to contest a blockbuster 2018 FIFA World Cup™ Intercontinental Play-off at Wellington’s Westpac Stadium, following their victory over two matches against the Solomon Islands.

The Intercontinental Play-off will see the All Whites face the fifth-placed South American team in November. The date for this match is yet to be confirmed. This will be the first leg of a home-and-away series with the winner securing a berth at next year’s FIFA World Cup™ in Russia.

The November match represents the All Whites’ biggest match so far on the road to Russia and will match and likely surpass interest in the All Whites’ previous sell-out qualifiers in Wellington - against Bahrain in 2009 and Mexico in 2013.

The opposition likely won’t be known until 11th of October following the completion of South America’s Preliminary Competition. Seven teams (Colombia, Uruguay, Chile, Argentina, Peru, Paraguay and Ecuador) remain in contention for the remaining three automatic berths plus the play-off spot.
